Hey bookworm friends! Ahhh did you see the announcement that Nathan Fillion and the OG cast are trying to bring back Firefly as an animated show? It’s not written in stone yet but it’s in the works and I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much…too late I’m already so excited! 🤞🏼So to celebrate, and put good luck into the air, I’m doing the Firefly Book Tag Rebooted.

Malcolm Reynolds: A Book with a Complex Character

Another Captain, Captain Claire Vessia from The Revenge of Captain Vessia. Being a vampire and a pirate captain she often has to balance two worlds. The two sides of her: constantly thirsting for revenge (and blood) taking care of her crew. She tends to solve problems with violence but the safety of her people comes first. She’s full of contradictions and has to contend with her code of ethics as she grapples with the question: will she embrace being the monster someone else made her become?
Zoe: A Book with a Hardcore Female Character

Shesheshen from Someone You Can Build A Nest In shapeshifts, eats people, and stores a bear trap inside of her to use as teeth. Even though she’s ultimately sweet, you can’t get much more hardcore than that!
Wash: A Character or Book with a Good Sense of Humor

I recently read Wyrd Sisters and it had me laughing from the get-go! It was very clever and witty and I enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoy Wash a lot, somehow I feel like he’d like Terry Pratchett.
Jayne: A Violent Book or Character

Gemina, and actually the entire Illuminae Files series, is quite violent; there’s a lot of death in every installment. I picked Gemina specifically because it felt like there was a lot more direct person on person fights. Hanna Donnelly is a great fighter who takes down a lot of enemies. A few characters are forced to become killers due to circumstances in order to survive, and there’s a whole strike team that invades Heimdall Jump Station who are disturbingly and gleefully violent.
Kaylee: An Optimistic Book or Character

The Octopus is a gorgeous picture book about a little girl who befriends a tiny octopus. She’s definitely optimistic and generally happy. The book has a hopeful tone that aims to inspire the younger generations to care for the ocean and, by extension, nature. Everything about this book is beautifully optimistic!
Inara: A Book or Character That’s Mysterious

I recently finished a buddy read for The Voyage of the Basilisk in which there is a character that has us all very curious. Suhail is mysterious because he’s only introduced with a first name and he pointedly doesn’t use his last name because he’s estranged from his family. 🤔 It’s clear there’s a mystery there and we have a theory but we’re not sure who he really is and neither does the MC. Can’t wait to see what comes from that!
Shepard Book: A Book or Character Involving Faith

The Demon of Beausoleil deals with a half-human half-demon that everyone thinks is cursed. There are demon exorcisms and possessed priests so I’d say that, yes, it definitely involves themes of faith.
Simon Tam: A Book or Character That’s Highly Intelligent

In The Tusks of Extinction there’s a character that’s the digitized consciousness of the world’s foremost expert in elephant behavior living inside the brain of a resurrected mammoth. Extremely weird and yet it fits this prompt perfectly! I found this short book fascinating.
River Tam: A Book or Character That’s a Bit Creepy

Human Scars on Planet Skin is a creepy book because there are tons of descriptions of decaying bodies, mould, and fungi. The environment in this story can be quite disturbing. I literally shivered now from thinking about it.

Let’s chat in the comments!
Have you watched this show? Or, what’s a show you love that was cancelled too early?

I’m cautiously optimistic about the Firefly cartoon. On the one hand, modern takes on classic IPs like Star Trek and Star Wars have been hit and miss (mostly misses) for me. The amount of original-cast participation in this one makes me wonder if it will be better, though. Fun theme for a book meme! I’ll try to think of something applicable.
Will avoid Human Scars, though. XD
