Reading Wrap-Up

August 2024 Wrap-Up & Stacking The Shelves

Hey bookworm friends, summer is ending, and school starts next week! My university days are long past but since my husband is a professor, we are still very much at the mercy of school schedules. The last days of summer break are always hard for me but I am so thankful for a wonderful season of spending time with family, friends, travel, and nice weather. That being said, it’s time to share my August 2024 Wrap-Up!

I’ll also be linking up with Marlene at Reading Reality for Stacking The Shelves

I’m happy with my reading this month! In terms of numbers I didn’t finish many books but I made satisfying progress with my ARCs & my Netgalley ratio is finally back to 80%. I also just finished an enjoyable buddy which we’d been planning to do for a long time ☺!

Format Breakdown

Genre Breakdown
🕵️‍♀️⏳ Historical Mystery: 2
🏛Mythology: 1
🐲Fantasy: 2

Edited to include any progress on goals.

🐲 Kodi by Jared Cullum 📱 (Graphic Novel)

This adorable middle-grade graphic novel was enjoyable and the art is stunning. My review is here.

🕵️‍♀️⏳ A Treacherous Curse by Deanna Raybourn 🎧

The mystery in the 3rd installment of Veronica Speedwell has Ancient Egypt and archeology themes. I had fun with this one though it’s not my favourite of the series.

🏛 Clytemnestra’s Bind by Susan C. Wilson (ARC) 📚

This took me a long time to read, I was so behind on the ARC that I just ended up borrowing it from the library😂 But when I finally read it, I devoured it and can’t wait to read more from this author. My review is here.

🕵️‍♀️⏳ A Dangerous Collaboration by Deanna Raybourn 🎧

#4 of Veronica Speedwell gives us a bit of progress in the Stoker x Veronica relationship. I’ll take every crumb I can get regarding those two!

🐲 There Will Come a Darkness by Katy Rose Pool 📚

Buddy read this YA Fantasy and I’m still gathering my thoughts. Review to come.
Satisfies Reading Goals: Own Shelf Books and Rainy Day Books

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, whether it be physical or virtual. Reading Reality posts on Saturdays but you can post any day that works for you— don’t forget to visit the link-up on Saturday to join in on the fun!

Since August is my birthday month, I was lucky to receive two books as a gift from a friend 🖤 Since I love supporting indie bookshops, I also went to Glad Day (a great queer bookstore in Toronto) to pick up Tingle’s new horror book. Speaking of Toronto, I also nabbed Twilight’s Secrets when I saw it was set in my city. It also helps that it was free when I saw it through an email offer.

  1. Seems like a fun month for you! I’ve heard the expression “Bury your Gays”, but only on TvTropes!

My favorite book this month was “Hotter than the Sun” — eye-opening collection of essays. Grad school has resumed for me already…..doing an “Adult Material Services” class this round.

    1. I hadn’t heard the expression until recently but since the book is about working in Hollywood, I think it’s going to be making fun of the concept or at least exploring it.
Oh great, it’s about nuclear weapons right? Sounds like an interesting topic to write essays about. Good luck with your course, sounds awesome. I miss my library studies days & my working in a library days. haha ♥

  2. Happy Belated Birthday, I hope you had a wonderful time. Well done on getting your feedback ratio back up to 80% too. It looks like you’ve read an interesting mixture of books lately. And I can’t believe youve finished that buddy read already, well done. My favourite read of the month was either Heart Of The Sun Warrior or Starling House. Both were fantastic and very different to each other.

It looks like you’ve received an interesting mix of books too. I hope you enjoy them all whenever you pick them up.

    1. Aw thank you 🖤 I did have a great time. Thanks, I tend not to request too many ARCs at a time so I don’t get out of hand with it lol. Thanks I buckled down during the last couple of days because I wanted to finish it before the end of the month lol.
Oh both of those sound great! I’m glad you have two stand-outs!
Thanks, I’m excited to try them 🙂

      1. Same here. I haven’t requested one in a while actually. I want to get my library stack finished or mostly finished at least first. Oh lol well I’m glad that worked well for you. I’m trying to do the same (not my the end of the month, just within a fortnight or so).
        Thank you 🥰

    1. I’m torn on it, I think I’m gonna rate it something like 3.5 ish stars. I think the plot was fantastic but I have several issues with it. I will write a review later for sure 🙂 & Oh no I’m sorry the second book was annoying, I’m thinking I’ll continue the series on audiobook at some point but I’m worried lol.
