Books & Songs That Will Make You Howl At The Moon

Howl At The Moon

Hey bookworm friends, Trick or Treat?🎃🍬 I hope you picked “Treat” because oh boy, do I have a treat for you! Remember when I made an autumnal-themed reading list with songs? Well, I’ve also got several Halloween-themed ones planned for October and here is the first one! If you love shapeshifters, pack dynamics, and running through the woods at night, today’s list is for you. These books and songs are about werewolves and will positively make you Howl at the Moon 🌑.

This list will contain 10 books (a mix of Read and TBR) and 10 songs that I love! For some extra fun, I tried to match up each book with the song that I felt matched it best. I hope you find something you like 😜!

📚 My Calamity Jane – Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows

YA Historical Fantasy; Calamity Jane, the American Frontier, and (Loup) Garous.

🎵Werewolf by Motionless in White is a catchy & poppy offering from a gothic metalcore band. The song lyrics deal with the theme of internal conflict.

⟡🐺⟡

📚 Secrets to Reveal – Tilly Wallace

Supernatural Historical Romance; Scottish Werewolves against a backdrop of war between Regency England & France.

🎵Wolf Blood is an instrumental song composed by Adrian Von Ziegler. It is a Celtic song about wolves and their symbolism in various ancient cultures.

⟡🌑⟡

📚Bitten – Kelley Armstrong

Urban Fantasy & Supernatural Romance; The FMC hunts down rogue werewolves & the story is set in Toronto.

🎵Night of the Werewolves by power metal band Powerwolf is by turns melodic and heavy. The chorus of “This is the night of the werewolves, run for your life” is addictive to sing along to!

⟡🐺⟡

📚Blood and Chocolate – Annette Curtis Klause

YA Urban Fantasy Romance; Werewolf girl falls in love with human boy, chaos & violence ensue.

🎵 Teenage Werewolf by South African pop musician Tyler Page is upbeat and so very danceable.

⟡🌑⟡

📚Written in Red – Anne Bishop

Adult Urban Fantasy; FMC Meg is a blood prophet, she can see the future when her skin is cut. When she runs away from those who use her for her skill, she meets werewolf Simon who takes her under his wing.

🎵Running with the Wolves by Nordic Folk musician Aurora sounds exactly like someone who runs with wolves—Feral, with a hypnotic beat. The song is about freedom and joining nature.

📚 The Devourers – Indra Das

Historical Fantasy & Queer Horror; Set in 17th-century Mughal India, A college professor transcribes a stranger’s story.

🎵 Werewolf’s Eyes by Birch Book is a haunting & folksy ballad with tragic lyrics.

⟡🐺⟡

📚Wolf Gone Wild – Juliette Cross

Urban Fantasy & Supernatural Romance; Werewolf man is stuck in his human form and might need the help of a witch.

🎵 The Wolves by JJ and The Pillars might not be literally about werewolves but it perfectly conveys the fevered and anxious POV of human prey being chased by wolves!

⟡🌑⟡

📚The Wolf Gift – Anne Rice

Fantasy & Horror; A young man bitten by a beast is caught between embracing who he is evolving into and fearing what he will become.

🎵 Wolf Moon by the gothic metal band Type O Negative is decadent and fits perfectly with the queen of gothic lit.

⟡🐺⟡

📚 WolfWalkers – Created by Tomm Moore, Adapted by Samuel Sattin

MG Fantasy Graphic Novel adapted from the animated movie. Steeped in Irish Folklore.

🎵Wolf by Swedish Indie Folk Duo First Aid Kit has the vibes of pagan werewolf women dancing around a fire.

⟡🌑⟡

📚That Time I Got Drunk And Yeeted A Love Potion At A Werewolf – Kimberly Lemming

The second book in the Romantasy series Mead Mishaps stars the werewolf from the first book, which I enjoyed. I’m hoping for the same blend of humour, adventure, and spice in this one.

🎵 Where the Wild Wolves Have Gone is a ballad infused with so much emotion, it’s perfect to cap off my epic nod to werewolves. I know I already included a Powerwolf song in this list but c’mon, a whole band dedicated to werewolves is impossible to resist!!

    1. Right? I was very pleased with the wide selection I found to fit my theme, something for everyone is my hope 🙂 & Thank you, that’s one of my favourite things to do!

      1. Ooh what a fun idea for a post, I can’t wait to see the other Halloween themed ones that you have planned.

Song wise I don’t think I’ve heard of any of these before. There’s one that seems vaguely familiar but I think it just reminds me of something else. I’ll have to check out the full versions of Teenage Werewolf, Running With Wolves & Wolf though as they seem like songs I could really enjoy.

Book wise I’ve read none of these 🙈 the closest I’ve come is having seen the adaptation of Bitten although the series is also definitely on my TBR.

I didn’t realise that the Calamity Jane book was about shapeshifters. And I’ll definitely have to check out Written In Blood, it sounds fascinating. I’ll have to check out Anne Rices series one day too, although I want to try her vampire one first (especially as I’ve owned book one for years).

I haven’t heard of the others so I’m going to check them out on Goodreads. From what you’ve said The Devourers sounds particularly intriguing though.

I know that there’s a song called Werewolves Of London but I don’t know any others off the top of my head. Book wise I’ve read Rachel Vincent’s Shifter series and I quite liked some of the wolves in Cassandra Clares world. I majorly need to read more werewolf books though.

        1. Thanks so much 🙂 I’m glad you like the idea for the post because a ton of my posts this month are going to be these types of posts 😂 The one for Saturday should be vampires if I can get it ready fast enough.
Yes those three songs are wonderful and I hope you like them, Teenage Werewolf is one I discovered more recently but it’s so catchy.

Oh yes I loved the Bitten adaptation and I read two of those books though I really want to read the rest of the series!

Yes actually it was when I found out Calamity Jane included shapeshifters that I got the idea to make this post and I really want to read those My Lady Jane books! Oh I hope you like Anne Rice’s vampire books I’ve only read Interview with a Vampire but have yet to continue.

I’ve definitly heard great things about the Devourers. OH That’s a fun song that goes with my theme, thank you! 🐺 I liked the werewolves in the Shadowhunter series too and I need to look up Rachel Vincent’s series now. Thanks for the rec 🙂

          1. Ooh really? I know you mentioned a few and I can guess at another but I’ll be interested to see if others follow too (and if my guess is right). They definitely caught my attention and I can see how you found that one catchy too.

I enjoyed the adaptation too. I’m really curious about getting to the witch books in that series but I’m sure the Wolf ones are wonderful too. Hopefully you’ll get to carry on with the series sometime

Ah right, well it’s a wonderful idea for one. And I hope you get to read the books soon then.

That’s wonderful to hear. I’d like to read it again one day but it’s one of the series I got rid of when I had a major clear out. From what I remember I enjoyed them though. They’re urban fantasy with lots of different variety of shifters that aren’t always covered. I think there were some pretty disturbing bird ones in one book but I can’t remember over much now 🙈

          2. The only problem is that they take long to make so I’ve been posting less than I’d like to but you can’t have everything in this life 😂! haha Oh yes I’d be curious to see if I do any of your guesses.

Yes I agree and I also want to see how the wolves and witches cross over (at least I hope they do).

            Thanks times two!!🥰

Oh that’s fair it’s hard to keep so many books and especially because it’s a long series and they take up a lot of space! And cool I love the idea of different types of shifters (the wolves have had a lot of attention already😅)!

          3. Yeah I can imagine they take longer to make than some posts. There so much fun to read though & I hope you’re enjoying working on them too.

I’ll let you know if you do 🙂

Yes that’s true. I imagine they must do.

That’s true. I’m hoping I can get them out of the library one day when my TBR is more under control 😂 and yes it’s nice when other shifters are covered too. It makes a nice change.

    1. Thanks, I love doing that 😊😍 & oh that’s awesome I’m glad to hear that because it genuinely sounds amazing!

  1. I’ve always wanted to try Written in Red. I don’t think I’ve read too many werewolf books in my lifetime. Maybe we will see a resurgence like we have with vampires. The first song I thought of was Howl by Florence and the Machine.

    1. I want to try Written in Red too! I definitely need to read more Werewolf books coz I generally like the ones I have read so I hope for a resurgence too! Oh interesting I’ll have to go listen to that one, thanks! 🖤

  2. This post is so nice!! *_*
I love your idea of combining each book with a song! (And I love your choices, too!)
I love the Anne Bishop series!! *_* And I had fun with Bitten too, while I think I should try My Calamity Jane, it sounds like fun!

    1. Thanks so much Susy 🥰 Yay I’m so glad you enjoyed my post and I really appreciate your kind words. Oh I really want to try that Bishop series, I’ve heard about it for so long haha.
I loved Bitten too though I only read a couple of books in that series and would love to complete it lol. Yeah somehow a western and shifters sounds like a fun combination I’ve never read before!
