Hey bookworm friends. Today’s post is a meaty one! I’ve been working on catching up with my Netgalley ARCs for a while now. And with these 3 reviews I’ve finally done it! Huzzah! 🎉It feels nice to clear the mental bottleneck that’s been plaguing me since spring. Don’t ask me why but my brain decided I couldn’t share any new reviews until I shared these ones even though they’re from months ago.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARCs; All opinions are my own.

Review for Swordheart
Unfortunately for Halla, she’s come into an unexpected and considerable inheritance. And now she’s stuck between distant relations trying to get their grubby hands on her money. Fortunately, she also inherited Sarkis, an immortal swordsman trapped within an enchanted sword. Sarkis is bound to protect his wielder from any danger, convenient yet annoying.
The ridiculous banter, and sunshine/grumpy chemistry made the reading experience so pleasurable for me. Swordheart is laugh-out loud funny and as sweet as a forehead kiss. If my genuine cackles and foot-kicking giggles are any indication, it’s probably the funniest book I’ve read in a while. I especially enjoyed the scenes which attempted to scientifically explore the limitations of a human body being stuck inside a scabbard for centuries!
“Sarkis rubbed his forehead.
‘She is lovely and kind and generous of spirit and someone has to keep her from walking off a cliff.’
‘And they say romance is dead.’ “
While it fits snugly into the ‘cozy’ space, there’s also enough adventure and tension (both romantic and plot-wise) to keep me engaged and rooting for the characters all the way through. The romance felt refreshingly un-rushed and earned. That being said I have one small issue with Sarkis’ characterization. I understand that he’s from an era long gone and, as a result, he has outdated notions. Nevertheless, his constant obsession with what Halla was wearing or not wearing was annoying. It gets challenged within the story, but it still dampened my ability to fall head over heels with the romance so it’s worth noting.

Review for When The Tides Held The Moon
I requested When The Tides Held The Moon mostly because of the gorgeous cover. But also because it’s a mermaid story with Puerto Rican representation and, as a Latina, that appealed to me. Speaking of the cover, the author also created the cover illustration, the art on the end-papers, as well as a ton of gorgeous in-text illustrations and they do not disappoint! 😍 There are a lot of elements of this story that I enjoyed. The prose is beautiful, and there is so much Spanish woven into the text in a casual way, like how a bilingual person thinks. Never fear, there’s a not-so-little glossary! It came in so handy, especially for Puerto Rican slang and proverbs I’d never heard of.
I especially enjoyed how the author crafted the dialogue between the multi-cultural troupe of Luna Park, complete with the speech patterns of 1910’s New York! Each character’s voice was vibrating with unique personality, to the point of seeming almost plastered on like a mask. Given that they’re circus performers on the fringes of society, and only tolerated as long as they can provide entertainment, this is purposeful. As the reader get to know the other characters, we’re forced to think about survival, what face you show to the world, and what lies you tell yourself. This to me was the strongest part of the book.
“It sounded the same in every language, and it wasn’t until I came to Nueva York and heard it repeatedly in the multilingual mutterings of other immigrants on the waterfront that I realized why. A deadly contagion that raged across the globe like fire didn’t have time to change its name.”
Unfortunately, the romance was deeply disappointing, and since this is a fantasy romance that’s quite a large portion of the book I had issues with. The romance begins in a very difficult place, with Benny’s actions leading to the merman being captured. Not the best way to find a boyfriend. But I had hope, I knew these two were going to have to work hard to iron out their issues and I was looking forward to the Merman holding Benny accountable. But did any of that happen? No! Because the merman almost immediately forgave him! Then they spent the rest of the time falling in love…while one of them was trapped and the other doing diddly squat about it! Everything about their so-called relationship screamed ‘the magic of love will fix everything’. And yet it didn’t, it just felt like a dead (and very unromantic) fish. Pun intended.

Review for Once Was Willem
I’ve been wanting to read more horror so when I saw the words ‘medieval dark fantasy’ I had a feeling that it would be for me. My goodness, was I ever right! Everything about this unique tale worked so well from me, starting from the writing style. The language was exquisite; it felt appropriate for the time period, slightly archaic and yet did not lose any of its accessibility or relevance. I enjoyed noting down so many quotes!
“The fear of necromancy was a thing that came and went across the Christian world like the seasons, and always left dead women in its wake.”
The story is being told to us by Once-Was-Willem, a young (and entirely lovable) un-dead boy who is basically just a mess of bones jutting out in strange directions. He tells the story of how he came to be revived (by the evil sorcerer Cain Caradoc) and subsequently befriended a whole host of other unnatural beings in the surrounding forests. If that sounds a bit cozy and even weirdly lovely, it’s because it is! But it’s also incredibly grotesque, disturbing, and wildly infuriating at times. Once-Was-Willem and his friends are beyond the fringes of society and their strange abilities and even odder looks scare everyone in the tiny village of Cosham. In fact they lean so hard into their fear and bigotry that it leads them into a series of terrible choices with tragic consequences.
The term ‘dark fantasy’ is not used lightly and I’d describe it more as folk horror with a large dose of body horror. I loved the soft magic system, if it can even be called that, and the lore which felt almost mythological in scope. It even included a twist on religious concepts that I ate up (I’d say more but it’s definitely a spoiler)! I feel like for such a short novel it did a lot and it did it well. Part of the reason it resonated with me is that despite the very dark themes and horrible happenings, the ending was so beautifully and painfully hopeful. It’s easily one of my best reads of the year so far if not the best!
Let’s chat in the comments!
Would you read any of these? Do you request ARCs or do you prefer to read without stressful deadlines? 😆

So glad you loved Once Was Willem! Carey always manages to make each new book different from the last. And I have a copy of Swordheart, I just need to find time to read it. Lovely reviews😁
Yess I LOVED It and I am definitely intrigued by a few of his other books so I’m excited to try them out! Oh yay, I hope you get a chance to read Swordheart soon, I’m curious to see what you’ll think of it 😀 Thanks so much, Tammy 🖤!

Yay I’m so glad you managed to get caught up with your arcs after the format issues led to you falling behind 🥰🥰 I’m also thrilled that the arcs were mostly successes too.
It’s a shame about the issue you had with Swordheart as it sounds like it would have been a five star read without it. I’m not surprised it had you smiling throughout over all though – the one I’ve just read by the author managed to do the same thing banter wise.
It’s very frustrating that the romance in the mermaid one is so weak as it sounds fantastic otherwise. I’m curious about it to check out all of the illustrations alone and then the cultural side of things sounds intriguing too. Yet the whole ‘love cures everything’ angle sounds so weak. That’s the thing I worry about with anxiety in books actually – that if someone has it they’ll fall in love and their problems will just fade away 🙄 include some reality please.
Omg yay I’m so, so happy to hear how much you loved Once Was Willem. Everytime I read about it I come away with the sense that it contains the strangest found family ever. It sounds highly unique. Im definitely going to have to check it out sometime.
Lovely mini reviews 🥰 I hope you feel a bit more relaxed now that you’re caught up ❤️
It seriously took me like half a year to get my shit together, kind of embarrassing not gonna lie but I feel so much better now 😀 And yes the ARCs were mostly a success you’re right, It could have been much worse.
Yeah overall it was fantastic just small niggles that don’t allow me to fully fall in love but that’s perfectly fine, I still highly recommend it 🙂 Aw I am so glad that you love her banter, she’s so good at that!
hmm I feel like it just could have been so much weightier had it handled the romance differently. The illustrations were gorgeous and there were tons! Plus I love that they were made by the author so it’s all entirely her vision.
Yeah exactly, like I know it’s fantasy and we’re dealing with a mermaid but that doesn’t mean we just throw ALL logic out the window!😂
I am so so happy I discovered Once was Willem since it’s unlike anything else I’ve ever read and now I need to read more by that author. I hope if you do try it that you also enjoy it!
Thanks so very much and I feel like a weight has been lifted, a weight I unnecessarily put on myself but still! lmao 😆
It was out of your control for a while though due to the format issues. And catching up on something once you’ve fallen behind can feel especially daunting I think. I’m glad you feel better now though and less overwhelmed 🥰🥰
It’s a shame they stopped it from being perfect but it still sounds wonderful overall. And yes she definitely seems strong at that 😍
Its definitely a wonderful touch that the illustrations were done by the author too. So frustrating that the romance let it down 😪 although I guess those can hit every reader differently.
Ooh any idea what you’ll try next? Willem and Girl With All the Gifts are the top ones on my TBR. Although I also already have my eye on the authors 2026 release 😂
I totally get that having recently done the same thing with my TBR sort through 🙈
It was weird how much it threw me off, but yeah I’m glad that’s done and thank you so much 🥰! Yes, it’s still one of my best reads of the year so not bad at all.
Yeah I’ve seen such varied reviews of When The Tides Held the Moon, people reacted to the romance in such different ways!
I think I’ve got my eye on his upcoming Outlaw Planet the most but also The Book of Koli sounds up my street too. Nice! Those seem like amazing choices.
haha yes you can definitely relate 😉!
❤️❤️
Oh wow that’s still incredibly strong praise then!
I guess romances can divide readers pretty strongly.
I really hope you enjoy both of those, I can’t remember the premise of the latter but I do remember it catching my eye before. I’m fairly sure a couple of bloggers I follow gave it positive reviews too.
Ahh ignore the links to your posts, I was saving them in my notes to remind me to check for replies 🙈
🥲🥲Well that is extremely cute 🖤 I shall mind it greatly but in like a good way haha! 😀
Swordheart was so so so so good!!!! I need book 2 now, but a friend did tell me there’s another series in the same universe that I can divert myself until the next installment comes out. It was exactly the book I needed last month, and maybe that’s why I’ve been struggling to finish things this month, lol
Ooof are you having a 5 star book hangover? Sometimes no matter what you read nothing else can compare! I am excited for book 2 also but yeah I desperately want to read all of her other books set in this world (I’m pretty sure there are two other series The clockwork boys one and the Paladin romance ones) 🤔 I hope you find something new and shiny that gives you the same amount of joy again soon!
I’m looking forward to reading Swordheart! I picked up a copy a while ago, and just need to clear my pile of ARCs a bit more before I read it!
Oh good luck clearing your ARCs, you got this! 💪🏼And yay I hope you enjoy Swordheart so much when you get to it 😀
