Reading Beyond Books│Meme Medley Friday #8

Hey bookworm friends. Happy Friday! I just got back from watching the new Superman movie and it was my very first Superman movie! I’m not typically a superhero movie person but I was curious because I’d heard great things about it. I’m glad I watched it because it was really fun and cathartic. And now it’s time for Meme Medley Friday; I enjoy the topic for this week’s Let’s Talk Bookish so I couldn’t miss out even if it’s already late in the day.

Today’s Friday Bookish Memes Are:

Book Beginnings on Fridays asks us to share the opening sentence (or so) of the book we’re reading this week.

I’m currently reading A Natural History of Dragons and loving it, so here’s its opening line:

Here are the rules for this meme: Grab a book, turn to page 56 or 56%, and share a snippet (but please no spoilers).

Let’s Talk Bookish is a meme where participants discuss certain topics, share their opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts. The topics for each month will be posted on Book Nook Bits & Dinipandareads one month in advance.

Reading Beyond Books

Prompts: What do you read other than books? Do you like non-novel forms of literature, like poetry and plays? Do you read a lot of news articles, op-eds, or essays? Do novels make up most of your reading, or is it a mix of those other kinds of writing? Do you ever listen to podcasts in place of audiobooks?

I’m not much of a poetry reader because I find I don’t really connect with the art-form. I’m sure there are poems I could love and I’ve appreciated a few but overall, I don’t find myself drawn to poetry collections. As for plays, I’ve read several during my high school and university days but I’m not very interested in the format when I read for enjoyment. I sometimes read articles, typically when I get a sudden urge to learn more about a topic or I have a question. Like for example, yesterday when I opened A Natural History of Dragons (last time I mention it today, promise😅) it talked about a period of midnight wakefulness which alluded to the concept of “biphasic sleep”. I find this concept fascinating so of course I had to put my book down and read an article about it instead.

Do novels make up most of your reading?

Novels do make up most of my reading though here are some of the other things that I sometimes read:

  • I used to read the Magic: The Gathering short stories. I don’t anymore because I feel like their quality took a nosedive. But spending a few years reading them did open up my mind to reading short stories in general.
  • Graphic novels and comics are the type of non-novel that I read the most often.
  • While I still prefer to read sequential art physically, I’ve recently developed an appreciation for how accessible Webtoons are. My newest Webtoon obsession is Froggy!
  • I don’t know if this counts but I’m going to include subtitles! When watching TV & movies, I always prefer to have them on for everything, even if it’s in English.
Do you ever listen to podcasts in place of audiobooks?

Honestly, I much prefer to listen to music or audiobooks. I find video podcasts more engaging than simply listening to them. Below is a very small list of podcasts that have managed to keep my attention for an extended period of time.

  • Grownups Read Things They Wrote As Kids
  • Let’s Talk About Myths, Baby
  • It’s Always Halloween
  • This is History: A Dynasty to Die For

  1. I love this! I’ve got the Lady Trent books on my TBR and have been wanting to read them for ages and just never got around to it. I love those first lines and lines from later in the book though! 😍 I totally didn’t include those types of articles in my LTB answer today but I do love reading articles and Wiki pages about a topic that I hadn’t heard of before but a book sparks my interest on! I love to see another Webtoons answer here as well. I haven’t heard about Froggy but I’m off to check it out now. There are so many incredible stories on there! Thanks for joining LTB this week 🙂

Thanks so much, Dini 🥰 So far I’m only at the start of Lady Trent #1 but It’s such an enjoyable reading experience! I hope you can get around to them at some point 🙂
I’m glad those lines intrigued you as the writing style is so engaging!
Oh yeah I love reading wiki articles too 🙂 Yes, Webtoon high five :P🖤 Oh my gosh Froggy is adorable and wholesome. I need to find more on there for sure.
& thanks for stopping by and I had so much fun doing LTB!

    • Veronica

I agree. that cover is fantastic 🖤 Ans so far the insides are doing fantastic things too! haha Thanks, Anne 🙂

    • Veronica

Ahaha I thought it was a great question too and that’s super fair, I had to think hard to find other things I actually purposefully seek out lol. Nothing wrong with just good ‘ol novels! 🖤😍

  2. Now that you’ve mentioned the latest movie being your first I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Superman movie 😂 I’m glad you enjoyed the new one.

Love the two snippets you shared from A Natural History Of Dragons, although given how much I’m loving the book maybe that’s not surprising 😂

I’m not into poetry or plays either tbh. I do have the odd poetry collection on my TBR that I want to try (and probably a few plays too) but nothing I’m desperate to pick up. With plays I miss all the detail of a novel.

Oh wow you looked that mention up about sleep, I never thought of doing that 😂

You know I want to try graphic novels and comics but keep putting it off 🙈

I also keep meaning to try podcasts. I have a list of ones I wanted to try somewhere actually. Out of the ones you’ve enjoyed I could see the myth one particularly working for me. I love all things myth related 😍

    • Veronica

Oh haha well I will say that at least for this new movie you don’t have to know anything so it’s very accessible for someone who doesn’t know much about Superman. I think it’s funny that we both hadn’t seen one yet and I never watched the Smallville TV show either!

Hehe so true, not surprising at all but still I’m glad you enjoyed the snippets too! There is no shortage of great quotes.
Ah I hope you like any poetry collection that you might try, I have some I distantly wouldn’t mind trying but I’m not rushing towards too 😂 & I fully agree about the plays, I’d much rather watch them anyway.

Yes it’s because I had recently heard about the concept and so it rang a bell and I thought it was cool that the concept existed in this world too 😂.
      Aw that’s okay 🖤
Oh yes you would like Lets Talk About Myths, Baby! Not only is the subject matter interesting but it’s with a feminist view and I love how the presenter, Liv speaks. She’s very entertaining 😀

      • To be fair even without seeing any of the films I still feel like I know the character well, I guess thanks to all the references in other shows 😂 but that’s good to know still. I haven’t either besides the odd episode popping on after Friends. I always thought it looked interesting though.

Definitely no shortage of those yes. And I get that. Some sound interesting but idk. I think it doesn’t help that you don’t tend to pick up a poetry book to read in the same way that you would a novel. And definitely, plays are made for watching anyway.

Oh wow really? What odd timing. I had that happen with some of the book mentions in Wicked Lovely though so I know it happens.

Ooh I’ll add it to my podcast list, just taken a screenshot to make sure I do so. I’ll let you know how I find it.

        • Veronica

Yeah that’s a good point, just information that you absorb from the cultural consciousness, I guess lol.
Ah, yes for sure, It’s extremely rare that I pick those up because that’s just not what I’m looking for when I want to read lol.
Yeah, super odd timing for sure lol and oh yeah? That’s so funny!
Okay cool, I hope you like it but if you don’t no pressure. Totally looking forward to seeing what your honest opinions are 🙂

          • Maybe one day we’ll be in the mood for poetry and get into it 😂 but I truly love losing myself in a story generally instead.

I still havent tried any podcasts but I do still have a list of ones to try sometime. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes when I listen to that one

          • Veronica

Yeah it’s extremely rare when I decide to try poetry, I’ve only done it twice within recent memory. I much prefer to lose myself in a story like you. Yes okay, that’s fair 🙂

  3. Subtitles! That’s a good one – I feel like when I had kids I had to have subtitles on because the noise going on all around me when I was watching something. My kids are a little bit older now, and they usually let me watch in peace but I still keep on the subtitles, but it helps when they do come and talk to me while I’m watching a show. I think I got used to having it on, and now feel weird when there isn’t subtitles.

    • Veronica

Yes oh that’s awesome, they’re just so good for multitasking. I’m glad your kiddos let you watch tv in peace now but subtitles are just always so helpful especially if the volume is now or the actors kind of mumble, sometimes I miss things! I feel weird when they’re off too 😂.

    • Veronica

I know, that made me a bit sad too! This book is fantastic so far though! 😀 Thanks for stopping by, Melissa 🙂
