Series Tracker: Series Started Before 2024

Hey bookworm friends! I hope you’ve been discovering some good books thus far this year 😊. In my reading stats post, I briefly mentioned I’d make another post regarding my series tracker. Every year, I enjoy updating my series tracker spreadsheet and that’s what I did today! This post will focus on the series I started before 2024. I’ll share whether I want to DNF them, try to make progress on them this year, or whether I’m currently caught up.

Carla Loves to Read & Blue Mood Café will be hosting the 2025 Finishing The Series Challenge which I’m going to join to encourage myself to continue and hopefully finish as many series as I can this year!

Before we start, let’s take a look at which series I finished last year—It’ll be quick since I only finished 4 🙈! I did start 27 new ones though 😂! See, this is why I need to join the challenge.

Some of the series have been on my ‘I need to continue’ pile for years! While I would still like to finish them all that’s just not possible. So I’m trying to be more intentional with the series that I spend my time on. As my taste and interests change I have to make cuts and that’s okay. They’re not that many anyway.

The Umbrella AcademyGerard WayJust Vol. 1

When I say ongoing series I mean the ones I started before 2024. These are the series that are still holding my interest after so many years!

So okay, I left twenty-two old series on my pile which is a lot but I genuinely want to read them all, still! The 3 cuts I made were easy and they feel right. As for the many series I started in 2024, those are future-me’s problem 🙃. In the meantime, please wish current me luck 😘.

Oh yeah Meg, you totally should I’d love to see what series you’re in the middle of or which ones you no longer want to read! 😀

  1. I didn’t realise there was a challenge linked to this topic ), good luck with it. Well done on finishing those four. I can’t believe you started 27 other series last year though 😂 good luck keeping up with them all.

At least with the ones you’re dropping you only got one book into them all. I’m still hoping to try The Vampire Chronicles books one day but I honestly don’t know when that will be.

As you know I loved the second book in The Nightshade Crown series. I also majorly fell for the second book in the Sisters Of The Salt series and had the same sort of experience with the Graceling ones too (although I do need to read the newest ones where the authors recently returned to the world).

You’re ahead of me with Percy Jackson, Mistborn and Crowns Of Nyaxia all of which I plan to start this year.

That #10 with Otherworld is pretty random 😂 I’ve done the same with a crime series though.

You’re so close with a few of these series so I’m sure you’ll get a few more crossed off your list during 2025.

Ooh how did you find The Dragon Scales book? I remember it catching my eye but can’t remember the premise 😂

Seeing your stats made me curious so I’ve just figured out that I finished three series last year, got up to date with one I began in 2023 and started another 18. There’s only two of those that I’m not up to date with though as most of them were series that began last year. I’m dropping one of them and undecided with four more.

I have a post a bit like this too with some of my backlist series to finish as part of my Tackling The TBR project. I can’t remember how many series I need to finish off the top of my head but there were a few 😅

Good luck catching up. I’m sure you can do it 😊

  2. The Captain

Ahoy there! I adore reading the crew’s Series Shakedowns! I recalculate at the end of the year and try to make sure that my charts are up to date. Of course this month’s reading means I have to update the charts again! I didn’t mean to start so many series but I have been in random moods. I love how colorful and organized your list is. I have no visual skills so they tend to be numbered lists.

I also abandoned the Umbrella Academy though I did like the first couple books. Huh that series is not officially on the tracker. Sigh. Must fix. I enjoyed the Dragon Jousters series and adore Penric and Desdemona.

Ahoy, Captain 🏴‍☠️ Thank you 🙂 I like reading series shakedowns too! Hah, good luck updating your charts, hope it’s not too much work lol. My spreadsheet itself is colour coded so I tried to match my post to the colours that are on my spreadsheet!

Yeah, I didn’t mean to start that many series either but that’s just what happens when everything sounds amazing 😂! I finished the Umbrella Academy tv and was let down by the ending a bit and I don’t feel the need to read the graphic novels to compare and contrast lol. Oh good to know, I have the next book in the Jousters series but not the other ones. & Pen and Des live in my mind rent free, I love those two SO MUCH!

  3. I like seeing your series breakdown here. I never thought about tracking series before end of last year when I had to fully admit to myself that I hardly complete them. I threw a spreadsheet together to give myself a better perspective and have decided to focus a little more on completing series this year. Hopefully I do.

    • Veronica

Thanks, Zezee! Aha oops I guess spreadsheets are inevitable 😆 Good luck, I hope you’re able to focus on series this year then 🙂 !!

  4. Nic

I have a spreadsheet where I track series – both what books I own (needed when collecting them from used bookshops and charity sales) and what I’ve read. I can mark when I DNF a book or when I choose not to continue to carry on to the next book, and both will mark the series as DNF. Otherwise, my spreadsheet tells me what series I’ve started (only read one book), have ongoing, am caught up on or have completed. One thing I do quite differently from what I see in your lists is count series separately, rather than a series of series as a whole. So if I had Mistborn in my spreadsheet, each era would count as it’s own series.

Dragon Jousters is one worth continuing on this year. I don’t have book four, nor am I likely to get my hands on it, and after reading book three I don’t feel like I need the fourth book as the it has a satisfactory conclusion. So I’ve chosen to mark it as a completed trilogy rather than a incomplete tetralogy.

    • Veronica

Ohh I love that you mark down what you need for used book shopping, very smart!
Yes, I love all of your spreadsheet details you’re sharing! I have something similar with my DNF’s too, it helps a lot!
Ah I understand you count trilogies or arcs of series as separate. I can see the benefits of that. I briefly thought about doing that too but by then I was tired and got lazy about it 😅.

I also sometimes count what I call the side quest books (like the 0.5s in series and such) but sometimes not, depending on my mood so it’s not the most consistent in some ways. Some books I also mark as Unnecessary and count that series as finished as far as I’m concerned. For example the new Hunger Games books I’m never gonna read but I read the OG ones. so it’s “Done”. It looks like you do the same thing too then with your Joust example. Love it. Our spreadsheets, our rules 😉!! Good to know the 3rd book ends in a satisfying way.

  5. I. Am. Impressed! 😀
I must confess that I don’t organize my series reading at all. It’s a problem, I know – and probably why I get so behind on them. Unless it’s a series I binge straight through – and that may be part of my “problem” actually: I like to be able to go from book to book and so if/when I start a new series, I have a tendency to wait until there’s more published. (Ignore how long that sentence got please 😂). I should probably do a little something to keep up with the ones I’m in the middle of, if no other reason than to see if I’ve got enough to dive in again.

  6. LOL, series tracking is a big mood! According to my tracker, I have 46 series in progress, 16 series where I am caught up to the most recently published book, 14 series I’m not sure whether I want to keep reading or not, 86 series I want to start (!!!), 80 series I started but abandoned, and 62 series I have finished.

Tilly Wallace’s Manners and Monsters series is one of those ones I want to start. I’m glad to see you liked it enough to finish it!

  7. I really enjoy tracking series so this was a very satisfying post to read ✨ I love your organisation! I am currently reading Interview With The Vampire. I am not too far into it yet, how did you feel about it? As you are no longer carrying on with the series, I presume you didn’t love it?!
I didn’t realise the edge chronicles had so many books! 🤭 My sister used to love them when we were younger!
    Happy reading!

    • Veronica

I enjoy tracking series too so I’m so happy you enjoyed my post thank you 🥰! Oh, nice ! I remember really liking it but I read it so many years ago now I don’t have a very clear memory. The only reason I cut it is because the series is so long and I would have to restart it! I gotta make some difficult cuts to make space but perhaps in the future I can always change my mind since I do love books about vampires and Rice is the queen of them!
Oh wow tell your sister she has excellent taste 😉 They’re some of my favs and I’ve been dawdling on finishing the series for yearsssss coz i don’t want it to be over 😭

      • Ah, I totally get that, after so many years I think I would call it an end and the series is sooo long. I am focusing on the first three so I don’t get overwhelmed 😂
Aw, it is sad when a series you have loved ends. You don’t want to say goodbye!

        • Veronica

haha yeah if it was short that might be a different story lol. That’s smart, taking it like one ‘trilogy’ at a time is clever 🙂
Right? Don’t want to say goodbye to your favourite characters even though it’s a bit silly because they’re technically not going anywhere you can always reread but it’s not the saaaame lol. 😂

  8. I’m curious, since you mentioned series with more than 11 books to go, others 7-8 books.. For what you plan now on keep reading them, what if you don’t like the next book in the series? Would you immediately put it on your DNF-series pile?

I started a few book series in 2024 but stopped because I didn’t enjoy tgem after 3-5 books. Most I start(ed) are new releases and I’d wait for tge sequel but decide to DNF or stop just because the sequel wasn’t as enjoyable anymore.

Honestly, I’d love to have a series I can go with for a very long time, rather than always start a new one and get disappointed after reading the sequel.

Hope you can enjoy your ongoing series books, happy reading!

    • Veronica

That’s a good question, Samy 🤔 It really depends on the series and so many other factors, I feel like that’s the kind of decision that I’d make case by case in the moment. But I could see myself giving a chance to a weak book in the series and keep going unless the next ones are also bad 😂

That’s super understandable, time and energy are finite so I totally get that 🙂 I guess the only way to eventually find one that you love so much you want to sink into is by trying a whole bunch! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also, I’ve been trying to comment on your posts (I just subscribed and got the email with the code) but there’s still posts I can’t see, like todays T10 one 🙁

Thank you and happy reading to you too 😀
