Hey bookworm friends, and a happy Top Ten Tuesday to you! Last time, I loved combining #Scifimonth2024 with TTT, so I’m giving this week’s TTTopic a sci-fi twist again. I combed through my TBR to find the oldest science fiction books on my TBR—here they are!

Yeah I love looking at vintage covers too, thanks! I think the Breed to Come is probably my favourite of these. So strange!

  1. RS

“If Wishes Were Horses”?! I was not aware Anne McCaffrey had anything that wasn’t pure dragons. How involved are horses in this, because covers and titles have lied to me about this component before.

Also, I love the cover of Ectopia.

    • Veronica

Hmm well it’s a novella or short story and the horses are around but it’s more about a growing boy during a time of war who wishes for a Horse (His pony is too small for him now) so it’s more about his family and how they are handling things at home while the father is away at war. So not extremely horse-forward but a heartwarming and lovely story.

I love that cover too! 😀

      • RS

Ahh, I didn’t realize it was a novella. Short = I’ll probably give it a chance if I run across it, then. Thanks for the insight.

        • Veronica

My pleasure! 🙂 I hope you enjoy it if you do 🙂

I enjoyed Breed to Come. It was interesting to see what sort of “people” the cats, dogs, pigs and rats had evolved into after humans left the earth (don’t worry, that’s not a spoiler). I hope you enjoy it when you get to it.
Dragonflight is an old favourite for me. I loved discovering Pern when I was 18.
Lathe of Heaven is good – though I did have a WTF moment near the end 😆.
Hopefully I’ll read Rocannon’s World soon as I really would like to make my way through the Le Guin novels. Let me know when you are thinking of picking it up as it may prod me to do so too.

    • Veronica

Hehe no worries, the reason I added it to my TBR is because I heard cats were people in this one. It’s quite intriguing and thank you glad to hear it’s an enjoyable read!
Awww I really should read Dragonflight, I love how much people love it and I wanna too!😂
Ahaha I feel like so far everything by Le Guin I’ve read has had a bit of a wtf moment lool. Oh well if you’re ever interested in a buddy read we can always do Rocannon’s World together, it would be fun to process it together if you’re down.

    • Veronica

That’s so lovely, I wish I had read these books when I was younger but I am utterly convinced I’m gonna love them when I do! So glad you still think of them ♥

  3. I love vintage sci-fi covers! I’ve read two of your books — Island of Dr. Moreau (after reading a re-told version, and wanting to read the original), and Ecotopia. I really do need to read Anne McCaffrey and Ursula LeGuin — both are big gaps in my reading life!! Great post 🙂

  4. I’ve never read any of these, but old science fiction can be fun!

    • Veronica

Yes, it can be fun and I have not read enough of it! Although some of the old sci-fi I’ve tried has not worked for me, I’m hoping at least some of these will 🙂

    • Veronica

Yeah I like that cover a lot too & I’m hoping it’s serene, I like those sorts of sci-fi. Hope you’re having a good week.

  5. Oh, see you were smart culling down your list by genre. I was too overwhelmed by the quantity of tbrs on my list to go through them all. I like the Rendezvous with Rama cover the best! Pops out at the viewer.

    • Veronica

Thanks, it works out that I just wanted to post something that fit with Sci-fi Month! 😁hehe. For Rendezvous with Rama I picked my favourite cover and I thought that one was cool too! 🙂

  6. The Island of Dr. Moreau is on my list this week, too! I feel like I’ve read / want to read so many adaptations of it that I need to read the original.

I have read 2001 and Dragonflight from your list, though. I enjoyed them both (but differently) and hope you enjoy them when you get to them, too!

    • Veronica

haha awesome and I feel the exact same way, that’s why I’ve been holding off on the Silvia Moreno-Garcia version!

Oh great that’s awesome I’m glad to hear you enjoyed both 🙂 Thanks!

  7. I don’t read a ton of science-fiction and definitely not the older titles. But I am curious to read more of Huxley and Ursula K. Le Guin! 🙂

    • Veronica

That’s fair, I can understand not wanting to read a ton of the older hard sci-fi especially. However, quite a few still hold my interest years after adding them to the tbr lol I hope you like any older sci-fi you may give a chance to 🙂

    • Veronica

Thanks, Emma! 🙂 Which ones have you read? Thanks for visiting my blog, I’ll go pop over to yours 🙂 ♥

  8. I haven’t read any of these but Dragonflight is on my TBR too. I’ve read a Doctor Moreau retelling once as well and have another on my TBR. Maybe I’ll check the original story out one day 🤔 and I have the Earthsea books on my TBR but not the books by the author included here. I’m not sure what my favourite cover is, maybe Rocannons World. I love the colours on Dragonflight though.

    • Veronica

Oh nice, yeah I’m not surprised it’s on both of our TBRs since it’s a SFF classic! I suppose knowing the OG Dr Moreau story is not strictly necessary to enjoy the Silvia Moreno Garcia one which is nice. I wasn’t sure but that’s good to know. Although I I still want to read the OG first coz I feel like if I don’t read it first I simply won’t 😂.
Yeah the colours on Dragonflight are bright and gorgeous!!

      • Very true. I was actually surprised to discover how old it was when I was doing my recent TBR organisation. Oh that’s the one that’s still on my TBR but I 100% hope to get to it next year. The one I’ve read was by Megan Shepherd. Yeah that makes sense, although you definitely seem to be better at picking up classics than me 😂 I hope you enjoy it whenever you get to it.

        • Veronica

Yeah, I was surprised too! & Oh I see okay I don’t think I had ever heard of the Megan Shepherd retelling, interesting! I haven’t read a classic in a while I’m certainly due for one I think lol 😂 Thanks!

          • It’s part of a series but I remember very little about it. I’ll have to reread it one day. I know I enjoyed it enough to be intrigued by the original but I don’t think it was a new favourite 🤔 honestly I’m not sure though. Oh lol me either but that’s not surprising with a total of perhaps 3 read 🙈

          • Veronica

Ah okay I hadn’t realized it’s part of a series, somehow that’s less appealing to me in this case. But I’m glad you overall liked it. & haha it’s ok just coz they’re classics doesn’t mean you have to read them!

          • Ah right, not every series is for everyone so I get that. True 😂 I do want to try and give more of them a chance. I just never get around to it because new reads keep catching my eye instead 😂😂

          • Veronica

Ah that’s very understandable 🙂 & I hope you are able to give some a chance next year then 🙂
