Hey, Bookworms! Welcome to my first Top Ten Tuesday post (TTT)! Every Tuesday, That Artsy Reader Girl hosts TTT on her blog, and encourages other book lovers to make a Top 10 list related to the day’s theme. Today’s prompt is a perfect opportunity to combine my love of nature with fantasy & sci-fi books! Introducing: My Top Fantasy & SciFi Covers With Nature!
Below I’ll list my top 10 organized by loose categories. Please note these are all books I enjoyed and would recommend.
Adult SFF
01
This cover perfectly depicts the setting of the book in two time periods. It was one of my favourite books and covers of 2023!
02
This lush cover represents the atmosphere so well. Set in Trinidad & Tobago, it tells a mythic love story between a Rastafarian man and a woman who can speak to the dead.
03
The bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden
Historical Fantasy/ Folklore
When I read this book I felt the deep snow, the dark of winter, and the forests of Russia in my bones. This cover looks exactly how it feels.
04
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
Historical Fantasy/Portal Fantasy
A gorgeous floral cover for a gorgeous lyrical book that captured my attention! The framing of the doorknob is simple yet clever for a portal fantasy.
YA SFF
05
I love Charlie Bowater’s art style and I could simply stare at this cover forever. It blends light and dark elements, like the story.
06
Another Bowater cover, I didn’t do it on purpose, I promise 😅 I think corvids are so cool & I really like the movement in this illustration, you can almost feel the flapping of wings.
07
The House of salt and sorrows by Erin A. Craig
Horror/ Fairy Tale Retelling
The water imagery in this book is wonderful and quite creepy. The small details of the tide pool bring the setting to life & I like the aquatic-themed font.
08
The second book of the Aurelian Cycle. Sure, the cover is mostly dragons but it does have vines and flowers so it counts, okay? I just want everyone to read this series; it’s an absolute fave and underrated as far as I’m concerned.
Top Fantasy & SciFi Covers With Nature -Graphic Novels
09
A Frog in the Fall by Linnea Sterte
Slice-of-Life Cozy Fantasy
All you need to know is that I adore anthropomorphized animals. If you do too, reading this book counts as self-care. It’s about a young frog experiencing life for the first time. The art is breathtaking and the story is meandering and philosophical.
10
The Mushroom Knight Vol. 1 by Oliver Bly
Urban Fantasy/Quest Fantasy
Another graphic novel with to-die-for illustrations. This one was an ARC I was lucky enough to read; it comes out on March 5, 2024, so keep an eye on MadCave Studios. The story uniquely blends the natural world, a fantastical mushroom world, with a dash of dark magic. It’s action-adventure & contains fantasy violence with some gore and heavier themes. BUT LOOK AT THE FROG STEED!🐸
I hope you enjoyed my list and maybe even discovered a new book! Feel free to let me know what you think in the comments!
